New Social Network Helps Refugees Reunite

A new cell-phone based social network may help refugees find lost loved ones in days or minutes instead of years, Tonic reports.

The pilot program allows refugees to register themselves on an anonymous database and search for loved ones via SMS or mobile Internet.

The cellular site is like a Facebook for refugees. You can search as well as leave and accept messages. It's a virtual home for people with no homeland.

Sudanese musician and former child soldier Emmanuel Jal searched for his family for 12 years before being reunited with them. In honor of the new network, Jal recounted his own experience in spoken word poetry.

To watch a short speech by Jal on what the launch of the social network means to him and to read more on the new technology, visit Tonic.com.
