New York City: Big City, Big Dreams

"If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere. It's up to you
New York, New York."

I absolutely love this song. But patience is also pertinent, action doesn't create a reaction instantly. Everything takes time. We all have dreams but cannot obtain them overnight.

When I came to New York as an intern for IVEX in 2000, I was a young girl from Spain full of dreams with a great opportunity to achieve them.

It was not an easy start, my salary was not enough to live in the city. I worked at a Spanish restaurant and was a babysitter on top of the 9-5 job! Often times I asked myself, "What am I doing here?" - as if I was wasting my time. But there are many stories of hardships, there will never be a shortage of hardships. After all, I was only 25!

Headquarters had told me that I was to stay in New York for 6 months, and then my internship would be over. I refused to believe that I had to go back home after just 6 months. I knew I had a wonderful future ahead of me. I was in New York after all, the world was mine for the taking. 16 years later, I am still in Big Apple living my American dream !

Just as it did with me, life prepares you for your next steps, you just have to be open and flexible. With every vision you will make progress no matter what the circumstances are. Everything ties together, you'll see!

I eventually climbed up the corporate ladder and became the Executive Director of the Spain-US Chamber of Commerce. Whether professional or personal, it is a common wish to want to conquer the world. I accomplished mine - and helped businesses do the same.

Moving to a foreign country on my own, raising children,my roller coaster struggle with weight, and working 16 hours a day... it felt nearly impossible, but every moment of it took me to where I am today! Every step mattered, even the small ones. I could not lose hope, and neither can you.

You have to dream your dream each day. You're allowed to feel drained, exhausted, weak, even sorrowed, you can feel it, but for no longer than 24 hours! Wake up and step out of your comfort zone, you're on your own path. Choose to be happy and successful today!
