Bill de Blasio was elected New York City mayor Tuesday night. The Democrat defeated Republican Joe Lhota. De Blasio, who is currently New York City's public advocate, is the first Democratic mayor-elect in New York City in 20 years.

He is set to take office in January, succeeding Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who's served for the past 12 years.
