New York Newspapers Reinstate Paywalls After Sandy

The New York Times will reinstate its paywall on Friday after Hurricane Sandy caused the paper to provide readers with free online access.

As Hurricane Sandy pummeled its way across the East Coast earlier this week, major New York-based newspapers—including the Times, Wall Street Journal and Newsday—dropped their paywalls to provide readers with comprehensive coverage on the storm.

New York Times spokeswoman Ellen Murphy told Poynter that the paywall was dropped for its longest period ever in light of Hurricane Sandy and the storm's aftermath.

The Wall Street Journal reinstated its paywall on Wednesday, about two days after the storm it the New York City area. Newsday's paywall has also been reinstated.
