New York Public Library President Is Sentenced For DWI

Anthony Marx, who has been president of New York Public Library since July 2011, was sentenced Friday on charges stemming from an earlier DWI incident.

On November 6 at around 3pm in Harlem, Marx backed into a parked sanitation vehicle while driving his library-owned Audi. Police pulled him over and found his blood alcohol level hovering a .19 percent, more than double the legal limit.

Though Marx originally pleaded not guilty to the incident last month, he was ordered on Friday to pay a $500 fine and a $395 surcharge, and to complete the New York state drunk driver program and attend counseling sessions. His license was also revoked for six months.

The library on Friday re-released a statement Marx has made after the earlier incident.

"I deeply regret embarrassment caused to my family and to The New York Public Library," Marx said. "My focus now will be on moving forward and assuring that this incident does not detract from the important work and mission shared by all my colleagues,"

In their own most recent statement, the NYPL spokesman said that the NYPL was "satisfied that the incident has been resolved and looks forward to the important work ahead for Dr. Marx and the Library."

Before his most recent appointment with the NYPL, Marx was president of Amherst College in Massachusetts. He has a Ph.D from Princeton University and other degrees from Wesleyan and Yale universities.
