New Zealand Earthquake: Magnitude 6.7 Temblor Hits Kermadec Islands

Strong Quake Hits Near New Zealand

A strong earthquake hit northeast of New Zealand on Monday, the USGS National Earthquake Information Center reported.

The magnitude 6.7 temblor was reported on the remote uninhabited Kermadec Islands, 50 miles northeast of L'Esperance Rock, New Zealand.

The Kermadec Islands are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a hotbed of volcanic and earthquake activity at the intersection of several tectonic plates, New Straits Times reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a bulletin noting the quake did not generate a tsunami threat.
