News Editorials Nationwide 'Shame' Senators Who Voted Against Gun Background Check Bill

A collective downpour of "shame" circulated on the internet this week after the gun background check bill penned by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) failed 54-46, just short of the required 60 votes.

The defeated amendment was the first major legislation aimed at addressing a string of mass killings related to gun violence over the years, and it sought to implement a gun control measure that polling showed was supported by 90 percent of Americans.

More than 20 newspaper editorials -- including from The New York Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and other nationally circulated papers -- expressed a common reaction: calling the senators who voted against the bill "shameful" and "cowardly."
