ALEXANDRIA, VA - SEPTEMBER 16: U.S. President Barack Obama visits a classroom and watches students Meghan Clark and Nathan Hughes (R) demonstrate the FIRST Robot, a robot created in the schoolâs prototyping and robotics senior research labs for last yearâs FIRST Robotics Competition, at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology September 16, 2011 in Alexandria, Virginia. Later in the morning Obama signed the America Invents Act, which reforms patent law so to give a patent to the first applicant rather than the first inventor and allows the woefully underfunded U.S. Patent and Trade Office to set and potentially keep its own fees. Students at these high schools are apparently being educated at some of the finest public institutions in the country, according to a new list out from Newsweek.

Newsweek's annual list of the top high schools in America ranked 500 schools this year, based on indicators like schools' state standardized test scores, graduation rates and SAT scores. The media outlet worked with the research organization Westat to glean its results.

This year's top 10 list contained mostly newcomers. Only this year's No. 1 ranked school had also cracked the top 10 last year, landing the number eight spot in 2013.

Below are the top 10 in Newsweek's list of the best high schools of 2014. Head over to Newsweek to view the full list.
