The Kenyan birth certificate pictured below comes from an admitted forger, and there is strong evidence that it is a forgery. But August has been a slow month for the media. So this still rates a story.

Moreover, there are three reasons to believe the document is real, or, at the very least, smoke indicative of fire:

1. Newt Gingrich previously was believed to have been born Newton Leroy McPherson, on June 17, 1943, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to 19-old Newton Searles McPherson and 16-old Kathleen Daugherty (her subsequent marriage brought the name Gingrich), both of whom were believed to have been born in the United States. Some question this. I was unable to find their American birth certificates.

2. A newt is a salamander commonly found in or near freshwater in Africa. Coincidence? As Emma Bull said, "Coincidence is the word we use when we can't see the levers and pulleys."

3. Gingrich received a Ph.D. in Modern European History from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1971. His dissertation topic: Africa. Yet another coincidence? Some say, "Not."
