Google is coming to a living room near you.
At the Google I/O conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, Google outed a uniquely designed device, the ball-shaped Nexus Q.
Defined by Google as a "social streaming media player," the Nexus Q runs on the Android platform and lets users stream music, movies and more from their cloud-based Google Play accounts.
The Nexus connects to your television set and can be controlled by your Android devices. According to the New York Times, the orb will get online via WiFi or Ethernet connections.
AllThingsD describes what makes the Nexus Q social:
Directly from the phone, users pick tracks from their Google Play music libraries and add them to their playlist “queue” (hence the device’s name). What’s more, multiple users can add tracks from their disparate music accounts to the same queue, creating what Google calls a “party”, essentially a modern take on the collaborative playlist with a nod back to the days of record-swapping listening parties.
Google has priced the device at $299. Pre-orders will begin on June 27, and the device will ship in July.
