Week 2 of the NFL season is almost in the books, and here's what this week has added to the story: Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers have thrown about 207 touchdowns in four combined games, while Robert Griffin III and Washington are 0-2. And speaking of the NFC East (which went 0-4 this week), Chip Kelly's Eagles are still scoring points and still not playing a lick of defense. Over in the AFC, it turns out that Tom Brady may be human after all.
Meanwhile, Seattle fans broke the world record for loudest stadium (twice!) during their team's 29-3 beatdown of San Francisco Sunday night, showing that they at least have recognized how special the Seahawks could be this season. (Seattle has outscored the 49ers 71-16 in the past two meetings.)
Here are five other key take-aways from Sunday:
1) Awful Refs
Nothing could be worse than what happened with the replacement refs at the beginning of last season, but this is an increasingly glaring issue for the league. Last week Bill Levy and his crew blew two big calls in the Green Bay-San Francisco game, and the first half of Sunday Night Football yielded several questionable judgments. Keep an eye out because it seems to be getting worse.
2) Seattle's Defense Is Still Best
The Seahawks' ability to play straight man coverage in this day and age of high-powered aerial attacks is incredible. Against a red-hot Colin Kaepernick and a 49ers offense that hung 34 on the Packers last week, Seattle limited San Francisco to just 128 yards passing and 3 points, including just 62 yards in the first half. All-Pros Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas are among the best in the business, but the stellar play of young linebackers Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright, along with an improving pass rush, makes this unit special.
3) RG3 Is Not RG3
Two weeks is not enough time to evaluate Griffin, but it's enough to see that he just isn't fully comfortable right now. The read-option with Alfred Morris hasn't produced much, but more significantly, Griffin has yet to show that same electric burst from 2012. He hasn't been bad, but fans have to be a bit worried right now because that defense needs them to score points and the read-option simply isn't there yet.
4) The Chiefs are 2-0!
While returning NFC East champion Washington is 0-2, trendy sleeper pick Kansas City, in Sunday's win over Dallas, has validated the hype with an impressive 2-0 start. The key for the offense is quarterback Alex Smith, the somewhat-eclipsed No. 1 pick of 2005. Smith brings stability to the team, and is a guy who can consistently get the ball to receiver Dwayne Bowe. Running back Jamaal Charles is a beast of beasts and this team may be for real.
5) Um, Pats???
Tom Brady and the New England offense look pedestrian for the first time since ever. With six of Brady's top seven wideouts from last year gone, tight end Rob Gronkowski still sidelined and no semblance of a running game, things are looking unusually grim. Against the lowly Jets Thursday night, the Pats punted 11 times and totaled a mere nine first downs, after leading the NFL in points and yards last season. In other words, Gronk and Danny Amendola better get healthy in a hurry.
