Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall was removed from the ice on a stretcher after Colorado Avalanche forward Cody McLeod slammed him into the boards on Thursday night. With the Red Wings and Avalanche scoreless in the first period in Denver, Kronwall chased a puck in the corner only to be rammed from behind by McLeod, who appeared to leave the ice to deliver the crushing hit.
The 32-year-old defenseman fell to the ice without his helmet. Nearly motionless, Kronwall lay on the ice until he was strapped to a stretcher. McLeod was called for for boarding and a received a game misconduct.
With the game still in progress, the Red Wings revealed that Kronwall had suffered a concussion.
