Nina Tassler: 'Optimistic' About 'How I Met Your Mother' Season 9

CBS Head 'Optimistic' About Ninth Season Of 'HIMYM'

The ninth season of "How I Met Your Mother" is close to becoming a reality. That's the word from CBS president Nina Tassler, who told assembled journalists at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that she was "pretty optimistic" Season 9 of "HIMYM" would occur.

"Certainly [creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays] have a very strategic wrap-up to the show [whenever it does end]," she said. "They know we want the show to come back next year. We're not there in terms of resolving the season. We're in early conversations and we're pretty optimistic."

For fans of the hit sitcom, this isn't a big surprise. Earlier in July, Variety reported that CBS and 20th Century Fox TV were negotiating about a ninth season. The eighth season of "How I Met Your Mother" -- which was initially thought to be the last when the show was picked up for two seasons back in March of 2011 -- premieres on CBS in September.

When asked about extending "How I Met Your Mother" beyond eight seasons in May, however, Thomas was decidedly conflicted.

"It's going to be heartbreaking whenever it ends," Thomas told Vulture's Josef Adalian at the end of Season 7. "Could it be a great ending after eight seasons? Yes. Could it be a great ending after nine seasons? Yes. But I won't say whether we're leaning one way or the other. When we were launching the show, we always thought eight seasons would be great for what we were trying to do. So eight would be awesome. But we just came off our best ratings year. We still think we have great stories to tell. I don't know. It's hard to say good-bye."

"How I Met Your Mother" returns to CBS on Mon., September 24 at 8 p.m. ET.
