A Lakewood, Colo., dad thought he was getting his son a special surprise for Christmas, but it turns out that he got far more than he bargained for.
Mark Giles bought his 5-year-old son, Braydon, a refurbished Nintendo 3DS from a local GameStop. When the boy asked his older brother for help deleting some pictures, nine graphic pornographic images were discovered on the toy.
GameStop employees at the store told Giles that the photos belonged to a previous owner and hadn't been removed before the device was resold. The company's corporate branch released a statement about the incident, explaining that the while they have stringent refurbishing policies, things do slip through occasionally.
Giles was given a brand new 3DS and some games, but told KUSA that the damage had already been done.
"You can't unsee this," Giles said. "He's not going to forget about this tomorrow."
The Nintendo 3DS comes equipped with several cameras that take images that can be edited with the handheld console. Updates to the device enable video recording and web browsing capability.
While this incident left both Giles and at least one of his sons visibly upset, the Nintendo 3DS is no stranger to racy photos.
In 2011, following the device's release, a Japanese pin-up model released a free gallery of "saucy, 3DS compatible photos in full 3D" that received more than 52,000 downloads in two days, T3 reported at the time.
This isn't the only incident in which a child discovered porn on a device this holiday season. On Christmas morning, a 9-year-old girl in Sacramento, Calif., discovered pornographic videos on an Android tablet. The device was purchased through Target, which suggested the child's mother return the gift, CBS13 reports.
In October, a mother in Georgia filed a lawsuit against Sprint and RadioShack after her 13-year-old daughter allegedly found pornographic images on a cell phone.
