Even after releasing his long-form birth certificate in April 2011, Obama is still being questioned about his birthplace, most recently by several Republican candidates in North Carolina.
Richard Hudson, a GOP candidate in the race to unseat Rep. Larry Kissell (D) in the 8th Congressional District, made headlines in April when he told a Tea Party group “there’s no question President Obama is hiding something on his citizenship." The Charlotte Observer reports one of his challengers, Dr. John Wheatly, recently called Obama's birth certificate a "poorly reproduced forgery."
Jim Pendergraph, a candidate who recently campaigned with "America's Toughest Sheriff" Joe Arpaio in his effort to win North Carolina's 9th Congressional district, said he has "reason to be suspicious" about Obama's birthplace.
"I haven’t seen the facts. I think there’s a lot of smoke and generally when there’s smoke there’s got to be fire somewhere," Pendergraph said.
Pendergraph's comments lost him the endorsement of the Charlotte Observer. In their retraction, the paper said Pendergraph "has done nothing but embarrass us and himself" by "buddying up to one of America’s more hateful egomaniacs and then joining with fringe 'birthers' to question President Obama’s citizenship."
Many have questioned Obama's birthplace since before he took office in 2008. Billionaire Donald Trump has continually doubted whether Obama's birth certificate is real.
Obama fired back at Trump at both the 2011 and 2012 White House Correspondents' Dinners. Trump said he "was honored" to be mocked by the president.
