NYC Health Department's Letter Grade System: The Best C Graded Restaurants

C-Graded Restaurants That Are Actually Great

Mayor Bloomberg and his health department squad may be touting the success of the city's restaurant letter grade system, but many business owners, chefs, and politicians are voicing their concerns over what they believe is a punitive, "cash cow" initiative.

Ironically so, among those upset about the mayor's controversial mission is Nectar Coffee Shop on the Upper East Side, whose caffeine fixes have been known to be a Bloomberg favorite.

The culprit? A single, cracked egg found in the kitchen's refrigerator during a hard-pressed, busy morning shift that relegated Nectar's rating to a B letter grade.

During a press conference where Bloomberg reiterated his unyielding position, the mayor said he was unaware of why on earth Nectar received the B grade but mentioned he'd inquire.

The cracked egg episode got us wondering, what other city favorites have been branded with "C" ratings (fairly or unfairly so)? We ventured into the city's restaurant search tool and were shocked to find the following!

Editor's Note: A previous version of this story included a slideshow of the best restaurants in New York with a C grade. The grades were out of date. For example, Royale 157 Avenue C currently has an "A" rating, according to the NYC Health website. The slideshow has been removed. We regret any confusion.
