Getting pulled over by the cops doesn't have to be a bad thing. Sometimes it can be lifesaving -- like when you're choking on a cough drop, for instance, and an observant officer follows your car, performs the Heimlich maneuver when you stop in the middle of the lane and then directs traffic around you as you recover.
NYPD Officer Gregory Zakoscielny saved an unnamed 49-year-old woman in just such a scenario last Wednesday, when he noticed the woman "having difficulty breathing and holding her throat" as she drove past his squad car on the Bronx River Parkway.
In a video of the incident posted to the NYPD's Facebook page, you can see Zakoscielny approach the car after it stops with its hazard lights on. He asks the driver: "Are you choking? You're choking?"
The woman manages a stifled "Yes, sir," as she steps out of the car. Zakoscielny instructs her to put her hands on her chest. Several chest compressions later, she dislodges the obstruction and gasps for air, sitting back in her car as Zakoscielny radios for an ambulance.
Based on the NYPD video, which ends abruptly, the woman appears to have recovered from the incident.
