President Barack Obama's reelection campaign set a new monthly fundraising record for 2012, raking in more than $150 million in the month of September.
The Wall Street Journal reports:
The September total far surpasses the $114 million raised in August, when the Obama team snapped a three-month streak in which it was outraised by Republican challenger Mitt Romney. At the time, the $114 million was the most the Obama campaign had collected in any one month in the 2012 election season. The most the Romney campaign has collected so far was $111 million in August.
As the Journal points out, the Obama campaign also raised a total of $150 million in September 2008, which broke all records at the time. But whereas the 2008 haul was raised solely by the Obama campaign, the 2012 amount is a joint effort by Obama and the Democratic National Committee.
The Romney campaign has not released any fundraising numbers for September, but both campaigns are fundraising jointly with their national party committees. Both the Obama and Romney campaigns also count money raised by their victory funds for state parties. The Obama Victory Fund is connected to all swing state Democratic parties, whereas the Romney Victory Fund is connected to state parties in Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Vermont and Idaho.
