McCormick Place erupted in cheers shortly before 10:30 p.m. as Barack Obama was projected to win re-election Tuesday night.

Volunteers and supporters packed the convention center, wildly waving American flags as McFadden & Whitehead's "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" played to the crowd. Obama tweeted a photo of him embracing his wife, Michelle:

Obama took to the stage early Wednesday and addressed the crowd, which had been waiting for many hours to watch the president speak.

Obama was joined in Chicago Tuesday by Michelle, daughters Sasha and Malia, mother-in-law Marian Shields Robinson and other family members.
