Exactly one year ago today, on the night of November 4th, 2008, Barack Obama was elected the next President of the United States. To say that people around the world responded with emotion would be an understatement.

In Kenya, Obama's relatives were singing "We are going to the White House!" in the streets, and the Kenyan government declared the following day a national holiday for the U.S. President-elect. In the days following, babies born in Kenya and the U.S. were named after Barack and Michelle Obama. And the residents of Obama, Japan had been going crazy all year.
