Obama July 4 Address: 'This Improbable Nation Is The Greatest In The World' (VIDEO)

President Barack Obama delivered his 4th of July address on Thursday, celebrating the day that the United States decided to move from "colonists" to "Americans."

Obama pointed to the U.S.' role as a "beacon of hope" to those who value liberty, opportunity, peace and freedom, among other values. He credited patriots in 1776 for their vision to stage the American Revolution.

"For the first of many times to come, America proved the doubters wrong," Obama said. And now, 237 years later, the United States -- this improbable nation -- is the greatest in the world."

Obama also thanked military members for their "vital role" in that rise.

"People in scattered corners of the world are living in peace today, free to write their own futures, because of you," he said. "We are grateful for your service and your sacrifice, especially those still serving in harm’s way and your families here at home."
