Robert Gibbs: Obama Has Achieved Cigarette-Smoking Milestone

Has President Obama smoked his last cigarette? White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs announced as much in a recent interview with CNN, telling Candy Crowley that the president has abstained from smoking for the better part of a year now, though he still chews Nicorette gum.

"I can report that it's been probably about 9 months since he last smoked a cigarette," Gibbs said. "He's done enormously well in quitting."

Gibbs made similar comments earlier this month, telling reporters the president has finally made progress in achieving a goal that he's been working toward since his election in 2008.

"It was a commitment that I think he made to himself at the end of the health care and with his two daughters in mind," Gibbs said on CNN this weekend.

Obama's smoking habit has created an unwanted distraction for the president, who has previously received questions from reporters about the degree of his addiction, been publicly counseled by Tom Brokaw on the issue, and taken health recommendations from the White House physician for not having ditched cigarettes early this year.
