President Barack Obama fired back at Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump for his claim earlier this week that black people in America are worse off than ever before.
“Even an 8-year-old could tell you that whole slavery thing wasn’t good for black people,” Obama told ABC’s Robin Roberts while walking through the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.
While speaking on Tuesday in Kenansville, North Carolina ― a city that, like the nation’s capital, is named for a slave owner ― Trump claimed black communities in America are worse under Obama than ever before.
“We’re going to make our country safe again. We’re going to rebuild our inner cities because our African-American communities are absolutely in the worst shape that they’ve ever been in before,” he said. “Ever, ever, ever.”
Obama has previously addressed Trump’s repeatedly tone-deaf comments about black Americans.
In a speech to members of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Obama said, “You may have heard Hillary’s opponent in this election say that there’s never been a worse time to be a black person. I mean, he missed that whole civics lesson about slavery and Jim Crow.”
“He says we got nothing left to lose, so we might as well support somebody who has fought against civil rights, and fought against equality, and who has shown no regard for working people for most of his life. Well, we do have challenges, but we’re not stupid.”
According to a McClatchy-Marist poll released Friday, only 3 percent of black voters nationally support Trump for president.
