At last weekend's Occupy the Midwest conference, which brought regional activists to Detroit for several days of workshops addressing city challenges and solutions, one of the meetings featured a more personal question ... or, rather, "The Question."
Lawyer Joe McGuire led up to the big moment with a story about meeting girlfriend Nina Chacker, a teacher, when they both started working with Occupy Detroit last fall.
"Without the Occupy movement, we wouldn't have met," McGuire said. "We're in it for the long haul … we want our children to see the revolution."
McGuire said he "just wanted to make a proposal" that his relationship with Chacker become "a permanent kind of thing," playing off the Occupy term for motions that individuals submit for vote at group meetings.
"We want to live the rest of our lives with each other, being partners hand-in-hand, so I just want to ask you Nina: What do you say, do -- do you want to marry me?" McGuire asked.
Chacker replied with a simple "Yeah!"
"I think we may have had a first here in Occupy," Occupy the Midwest organizers wrote on Facebook. "We passed a proposal without a vote."
But McGuire isn't quite the first Occupier to mix marriage and activism. Back in October, a man used Occupy Wall Street's "human microphone" to propose to his bride-to-be. Lucky for him, she accepted.
