Oikos University Shooting: Arne Duncan Says Shooting Was 'Senseless Violence'

Arne Duncan, Local Officials React To Oakland College Shooting

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said he was "saddened" on Tuesday, after learning of a deadly mass shooting at an Oakland college.

"I was saddened to learn of the senseless violence and loss of life at Oikos University in Oakland," Duncan said in a statement. "My thoughts are with the community and families of the victims."

Seven people were killed and three were injured when One L. Goh, a 43-year-old former student at the small Christian college, entered a classroom and opened fire Monday. Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said Goh was looking for a female administrator. After learning she was not there, witnesses say he showed his gun and began shooting as students ran.

Jordan said Goh did not appear to be remorseful.

"Today there are a number of individuals who lost their lives to senseless violence," Larry Reid, the Oakland City Council president, said on Monday. "It's just another sad day in my city."

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said "I hope we will put our arms around this group of people and these families and try to bring peace back to this city."
