WASHINGTON ― The Justice Department on Thursday released a memo from the Office of Legal Counsel that signed off on President Donald Trump’s executive order last week halting immigration from several Muslim-majority countries and temporarily suspending all refugee resettlement.

The memo was authored by Curtis E. Gannon, the acting assistant attorney general in charge of the Office of Legal Counsel. “The proposed Order is approved with respect to form and legality,” Gannon wrote in the Jan. 27 memorandum.

Trump fired former acting Attorney General Sally Yates on Monday night after she said that Justice Department lawyers would not defend the immigration restrictions in court.
