In schools across America, the celebration of "homecoming" is usually a big event, one that students will always remember. And certainly no one at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Kansas will ever forget this year's homecoming, when 82-year-old Frances Wood -- dubbed Granny Fanny -- was crowned homecoming queen.
Wood, who's the campus' oldest student and apparently also the most popular, enrolled at the university shortly after her husband passed away.
"I was beginning to get just a little lonely and depressed. I needed something different to do and believe me, this is different," Wood told KCTV.
"I thought is this really real, am I really doing this," she added.
When she was named "Homecoming Granny" at the weekend event, the vivacious octogenarian received a standing ovation.
"I do get called out ‘Granny Franny,' ‘Hi Granny Franny' every once in a while, and that's been fun," Wood told KCTV.
Students such as Konner McIntire say Wood is like everyone's grandma away from home.
"Students feel loved by her," McIntire told KCTV.
Wood is so well-liked that she was asked to homecoming by not one but by three different boys.
"Yes, she did say that we need to get real girls that are potential wives," student Dylan Aebersold told KCTV.
Certainly this wasn't the fall's only memorable homecoming celebration.
Earlier this month, West Orange High School just outside of Orlando crowned two teens with Down syndrome homecoming queen and king.
And an Illinois high school voted two openly gay students homecoming king and queen earlier this month.
