It's safe to say that One Direction's "first time" was one to remember. The british boy band's highly anticipated 2012 MTV Video Music Awards performance this evening was, to quote most of Twitter, "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Harry, Niall, Louis, Liam and Zayn ditched the suits they wore on the red carpet earlier in the evening for laid back (and uncharacteristically non-matching) looks on stage. They sang "One Thing" -- their latest single -- and though there were some background vocals to be heard, the boys held their own in what will likely be considered one of the less over-the-top, more intimate acts of the evening. And it goes without saying that the crowd loved every single swoony second of it.

Earlier in the evening 1D brought home 2 awards, including "Best Pop Song," beating out Rihanna, Maroon 5, Fun, and, much to the dismay of #Beliebers everywhere, the Biebs himself. They also won "Best New Artist."

Check out some photos of One Direction at the VMAs below. What do you think of Liam and Louis's new, shorter do's and Zayn's ever-changing coif? And, more importantly, what did you think of their performance? Sound off in the comments below or tweet @huffpostteen.
