Traveling the world is meant to open people to new experiences, but sometimes it can be hard for black people to fully enjoy those experiences.
Travel blogger Jo Franco sheds light on the difficulties of traveling while black in the video above. From unwarranted stares to offensive comments, Franco talks about the uncomfortable encounters she's faced while spending time abroad.
Franco recalled, in the video, a time she was in Cairo, Egypt with a group of friends and received many insulting comments about her skin. The most offensive, however, was when she said she was wiping food off of her hands at a restaurant and a worker said to her, "No matter how many times you try, you can't wipe off your brown skin."
More than anything else, she said, it bothers her that she doesn't see other travelers of color on her voyages. But she said she hopes to change that because no matter how many comments or prolonged stares she gets, she said she'll never stop exploring and wants to encourage others to do the same.
"The ignorance ain't gonna stop my hustle and every time I travel, my goal is to help people open their minds one trip at a time, one conversation at a time and that's it."
