Why It's Never OK To Lie In Your Online Dating Profile

Online dating can be challenging enough, but when you factor in the little white lies people tell before meeting in person, it can feel downright impossible to find your true match.

By lying about our age or height, we ultimately contribute to the build-up of hopes that are crushed when someone realizes that they've been misled. Behavioral economist Dan Ariely, one of the creators of new film "(Dis)Honesty: The Truth About Lies," joined HuffPost Live host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani to explore our human tendency to fib -- and why that urge will never benefit us in the online dating scene.

"The reality is that we often lie for a short-term gain, and those things end up coming back and biting us," Ariely said. "I think basically lying and dishonesty is not a long-term computation... At the moment, we just want to move to the next step, and if we lie in that moment, we can actually decrease our ability in later gains. Online dating is a terrible game. People lie and then meet for coffee... The disappointment is disturbing."
