Oprah Tells Leno: Letterman Sex Joke Was 'Beneath You' (VIDEO)

Jay Leno appeared on "Oprah" Thursday to discuss NBC's late-night brouhaha, and Oprah took him to task for joke he made about David Letterman's sex scandal.

"Letterman's been hammering me every night," Leno said on the January 20 show. "Oh, going after me. Hey, Kevin, do you know what's the best way to get Letterman to ignore you?... Marry him. Okay? That's the best way. He will not bother you. He won't look you in the eye. No problem at all."

After Oprah played the video of the joke on her show, Leno asked, "Did you laugh when you heard it?"

"No, I did not," she replied. "No, I did not laugh....I thought, whoa. You know what? I thought that was beneath you, actually. I thought why did you step into that?"

Leno defended himself on the grounds that Letterman hit first.

"But how many jokes like that have I done?" he asked. "One. I did one joke in the middle of the week and I never did another one, because I said, there, I had a cheap shot thrown at me, I threw one cheap shot back and I moved on."
