Oprah's Yard Sale Rakes In $600,000 For Leadership School

Oprah's Yard Sale Fetched Big Bucks This Weekend

While many of us presumably kicked back for some QT time this weekend, Oprah Winfrey was busy downsizing her estate, auctioning off some $600,000 worth of furniture, art and antiques at what was billed to be an epic yard sale, held Saturday in Santa Barbara.

Proceeds from the event, which reportedly took up three tents on the grounds of the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club, benefited Winfrey's Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, a cause that seemed to have upped the ante for auction attendees.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the biggest sales of the day included a set of six 18th-century Louis XVI armchairs with hand-embroidered details, which went for $60,000; two 13-ft. long sofas, upholstered in crushed velvet with roped fringe, which brought in $8,750; and a 16-by-20-inch print of a TV Guide cover photo featuring Winfrey, which had a pre-auction estimate of $200 to $400 but ended up selling for $3,000.

The collection of goods on sale represent nearly 30 years of items Oprah says she's amassed. "I've been accumulating things since 1985," she told Entertainment Tonight. "I talk about it a lot in [O] the magazine. We talk about decluttering. And I realized, I need to declutter my own life," she said.
