When unthinkable tragedies like the Orlando Shooting happen, most of us aren't in a position to make an immediate impact.
We can pray. We can send our condolences. We can sign petitions. Maybe donate blood if we're local.
But what if we're not first responders? What if we don't work in Congress?
"Be the change you want to see in the world." - Gandhi
When we see violence like this, it upsets us because we value peace.
We value kindness. We value life.
We value love, respect, and tolerance.
But if we're honest with ourselves, we don't always live up to those values in our own lives.
Sometimes we aren't kind...
Sometimes we argue with loved ones, people at work, or strangers online, rather than going for peace...
Sometimes we're intolerant of others and wish they were more like us...
We may not like to admit it, but sometimes it's true.
When we're outraged that others aren't living their lives according to our values...
And we, ourselves, are not always living our lives according to our values...
That's where our work begins.
This is our place of empowerment.
When Tragedy Strikes, We Have a Fresh Opportunity to Look Closely at Our Values...
To look carefully at how we lead our lives...
To watch for places where we tend to be unkind, intolerant, disrespectful, and unloving with those close to us and in our communities...
And to recommit to thinking, speaking, and acting in accordance with our values more often.
Not because it will change what happened in Orlando.
Not because it will bring back the lives of those 49 people who were killed.
We can focus on living our values more fully because those things matter to us.
So we can walk our talk...
And so that we can be the change we want to see in the world.
This is our place of empowerment.
