Bruges may not be huge, but there’s still a lot to see and do in this tiny medieval Belgian town. So whether you spend a day or a full week, a flight across the pond to Europe is well worth a visit to Belgium’s most well-preserved medieval city. Here’s what you have to check out.

Dijver Mansions

The most photographed scene in Bruges can be found at the far end of the Dijver Canal. This stunning grouping of mansions dates back to the 15th century, and is the place where a fugitive English King once took shelter. Today, these gorgeous buildings are the site of several museums including the Gruuthusemuseum where you can admire an exquisite collection of lacework, tapestry, carvings and more.

Market Square

The most distinctive landmark in Bruges is located in the Markt, the city’s main square. The Belfry, an 83-metre-high tower dating back to 1248, soars above the city and can be easily seen from afar. Be sure to pause in the square to hear the bells. A carillon of 47 bells rings out every 15 minutes. The perimeter of the square is decorated with many notable colourful and ornate buildings.

Town Hall

Another gorgeous city square to visit is Burg. Here you’ll find yourself surrounded by several more beautiful buildings, the most ornate of which is the town hall. One of the oldest buildings in Belgium, it was began construction in 1376 and features ornate gothic details. On the other end of Burg, you’ll find the Basilica of the Holy Blood. This church is Gothic on the outside, and Romanesque on the inside, and has on display a crystal vial said to contain the blood of Jesus Christ.

Michelangelo’s Masterpiece

Another must-see is the Church of Our Lady, notable for it’s 112-metre tall spire that’s the tallest in Belgium. This church contains an impressive collection of art, the most valuable of which is a marble sculpture by Michelangelo depicting the famous image, Madonna and Child.

Bonifacius Bridge

Just behind the Church of Our Lady, a rustic stone bridge hooks over the canal, connecting pedestrians to a 16th century mansion that now houses a luxury hotel. This pretty little spot is the perfect place for a quiet moment alone or with a loved one.

Waffles and Chocolate

A visit to Belgium isn’t complete without indulging in a chocolate-drenched Belgian waffle. Order one in a restaurant, or just grab one off the street – they are better than you can imagine! Don’t forget to check out some chocolate boutiques for Belgian chocolate. You’ll find every object imaginable made from the most divine-tasting pure Belgian chocolate.

Bruges at Night

Bruges is beautiful during the day, but at night it’s just something else. Buildings light up in a golden hue, their reflections dancing gracefully in the tranquil waters. Stay, and take in the sights for a while. Just don’t forget to go back to the hotel at the end of the night.
