Florida's Republican Attorney General Pam Bondi won re-election Tuesday, defeating Democratic challenger George Sheldon and Libertarian nominee Bill Wohlsifer.
Bondi, a former state prosecutor from Tampa, was first elected in 2010 alongside fellow tea party favorite Gov. Rick Scott (R). A vocal opponent of the Affordable Care Act and the expansion of Medicaid in Florida, she was the lead attorney general in an unsuccessful bid to overturn Obamacare on grounds it was unconstitutional.
She has most recently taken up defense of Florida's ban on same-sex marriage, arguing it would "impose significant public harm" if Florida recognized such marriages performed in other states.
Her reelection campaign focused on a get-tough-on-crime message after Bondi declared victory against Florida's oxycodone dispensing "pill mills" during her first term.
"I can only focus on doing what's right," Bondi said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. "In my mind, that starts with protecting our state — against drug dealers, against people raping our kids, against human trafficking, all of those issues."
Bondi ran into campaign controversy last September when she delayed a man's execution because it conflicted with a campaign fundraiser.
A former state representative, Sheldon stepped down from his role as acting assistant secretary at the federal Department of Health And Human Services' Administration for Children and Families to run against Bondi.
