As great of a 2015 season as Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has had, he's not the MVP of the league. In fact, he's not even the MVP of his own organization. That honor goes to the Panthers' Spanish radio announcer, Jaime Moreno, who is an absolute delight to listen to Sunday in and Sunday out.
The Panthers have had a lot of memorable moments during their 15-1 season, but they become all the more memorable when overlaid with Moreno's wonderful radio commentary. His calls are full of passion, spontaneity and singing -- all three which can be lacking in English-speaking radio.
Really, they should put Moreno's soundbites in some sort of sports broadcasting time portal so people can still enjoy them in 3016. They are that legendary. He's the team's real MVP, and here are his finest moments.
Moreno went absolutely bonkers in Week 6 when Cam Newton threw a game-winning touchdown to tight end Greg Olsen against the Seattle Seahawks with 32 seconds.
Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis, who is the longest tenured captain on the team, has appropriately been given the nickname "captain" by Moreno.
So when Davis' interception of Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in Week 9 helped ensure a Panthers win, Moreno joyfully turned that nickname into a little song.
That type of line would not work for one of the English-speaking broadcast teams, but it sounds absolutely magical in Spanish.
The call was from Carolina's Thanksgiving Day game against the Dallas Cowboys. Linebacker Luke Kuechly intercepted a Tony Romo pass and returned the pick for a touchdown.
Among other things, Moreno urges Kuechly to get in the end zone and dance. He also thinks Kuechly's touchdown is both "pretty good" and "very good," which is true.
The Panthers broadcaster was delighted that Carolina kicker Graham Gano was able seal the victory over the New York Giants in Week 15.
Moreno uses a play on words with Gano's name and the verb "ganar," which is Spanish for "to win." As well as being an enthusiastic broadcaster, Moreno is also a linguistic genius.
In the Week 16 game against the Falcons, Cam Newton had an eight-yard touchdown run. As you can imagine, Moreno was very excited for the score.
The announcer started singing a line from "El Coco No," a song by Mexican artist Roberto Junior Y Su Bandeño.
What English-speaking announcer can randomly burst into song after a big play? None, because they aren't the MVP. Jaime Moreno is.
