LA has long been known as a mecca for skateboard culture, and soon it will be the site of the ultimate shrine to skate lifestyle.
A house that is fully skateable -- yes, that includes walls, furniture, and even kitchen appliances -- is being built at the top of Malibu's Las Flores Canyon. The surfaces in all the rooms curve to form a continuous tube with a ten foot radius, so people can actually skate on the ceilings. All the furniture in the 2,200 square-foot house will also be curved, according to the project's website. The site bills the structure as the first step in "a utopia city for skateboarders," which would have "a skateable path, like a ribbon connecting everything together, links each building in an unending ability to keep in motion on your board."
The house is named "PAS" in honor of its future occupant, Pierre-André Senizergue, the owner of the Etnies skateboard company and former professional skater. A longtime LA resident and proponent of skate culture, according to the LA Times, he has hired fellow French expats based in SoCal to help him with his vision.
Architect François Perrin is responsible for the design of the structure, while Gil Le Bon Delapointe is taking care of decor. Delapointe collaborates with Senizergue on a line of home furnishings influenced by mid-century modern California design and skate culture, called Skate Study House--a nod to the famous Case Study House project.
The team recently exhibited a prototype of the PAS House at Paris' La Gaite Lyrique. They used bent plywood to create a full-scale, 753.5 square foot model of the living room, reports the Architect's Newspaper Blog. Watch a video of skaters testing out the model, showing exactly what Senizergue will have to look forward to when he moves into the completed home next year.
