There are performers and then there's Patti LuPone. The the two-time Tony and two-time Grammy winning superstar has astonished stage, TV and film audiences since the 1970s. Never one to play one specific kind of character or genre, LuPone can gracefully move between a variety of mediums -- comedies, dramas, you name it.
LuPone famously played Eva Perón in Evita, Fantine in the original London cast of Les Misérables, Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes and Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd. And that's just a tiny fraction of her vast stage experience. There are also her TV appearances in LBJ: The Early Years, American Horror Story, Oz, Glee, 30 Rock and of course, her series Life Goes On, in which she played a mom to a son born with Down syndrome, which was groundbreaking at the time. (LuPone has been nominated for two Emmy awards.)
And this month until April 14, audiences have the unique opportunity to see LuPone live in the intimacy of the Broadway supper club, 54 Below. Before a lucky crowd of fewer than 150 people, LuPone performs her show "The Lady with A Torch." In pure Patti fashion, she sings an eclectic collection of torch songs by Jule Styne, Harold Arlen, George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter and others.
