The hugely anticipated Pearl Jam show at Wrigley Field in Chicago was stalled for nearly two-and-a-half hours Friday night after threats of severe weather drove fans into dugouts, inside the stadium and into nearby bars.
During the wait, which started just before 9 p.m., concert-goer and freelance photographer Dwane Lindsey of suburban Arlington Heights snapped this gem from the 200-level seats:
Lindsey later told HuffPost Chicago via email that Pearl Jam played "Elderly Women Behind the Counter In a Small Town" before announcing the hour-long break to let the storm pass.
"The stadium lights came on and the people on the field started to file out for safety," Lindsey wrote, noting he's long loved weather photos but normally shoots "sports and wildlife" professionally. "It took about a half hour before the rain came and then the lighting. I just happened to hit the "shutter button" on my iPhone 5 at practically the perfect moment."
The band later returned just before their 11 p.m. curfew to debut material from their conveniently-named upcoming album, “Lightning Bolt,” and played a 32-song set that stretched until 2 a.m. according to Tribune music critic Greg Kot.
Frontman Eddie Vedder is a noted Cubs fan, and before tearing into his Cubs anthem, “All the Way,” the Tribune reports Vedder produced Cubs Hall of Famer Ernie Banks to sing a chorus of the song.
The severe weather alerts farther south of Wrigley put a cap on the final half hour of Bjork's set closing out Day 1 of the Pitchfork Music Festival, while Phish's first of a three-night stint at Northerly Island was cut short as well.
