Following the advancement of a pivotal bill that could possibly make Minnesota the 12th state to allow same-sex marriage, a GOP lawmaker became emotional on the House floor, saying her "heart breaks" for the state, the Star Tribune reported on Thursday.
"My heart breaks for Minnesota," Rep. Peggy Scott (R-Andover) said. "It's a divisive issue that divides our state. It's not what we needed to be doing at this time. We want to come together for the state of Minnesota, we don't want to divide it."
The Minnesota House approved the measure 75-59, the Associated Press reports. The state Senate will consider the measure on Monday. If it passes, Minnesota would become the third state this month to legalize gay marriage, following Delaware and Rhode Island.
While supporters rejoiced on Thursday, others like Scott, expressed their disapproval. Julie Burt, an opponent of gay marriage who was at the Capitol during the vote, also said her heart broke over the historic vote.
"I feel sorry for our world. But the world has turned," Burt said. "The world has turned to a place that wants immediate gratification. And it breaks my heart. Breaks my heart for my children and my grandchildren."
