In September, Elonë Kastratia noticed a tweet with a powerful statement:
The message got Kastratia thinking. And with International Women's Day being celebrated March 8, she decided to print that feminist message and a few others on sanitary napkins and post them on traffic signs all over Karlsruhe, Germany, where she lives.
"I'm not sure if its illegal, but seriously I don't care [because] they are easy to [take off]," she wrote on Instagram.
"I was waiting for a good moment, and I decided [International Women's Day] would be the best time to do it," she told The Huffington Post. "The people on the street looked at it and thought about it! I wanted to make people aware of problems, and I wanted to provoke."
Her message resonated far beyond Karlsruhe. One photo she posted to Tumblr has been seen hundreds of thousands of times.
"I never thought that it would go [viral] like this," she said. "I wanted to only provoke the people in the city because there is so much sexism."
Kastratia posted more photos to Tumblr and Instagram, and she said she's gotten a tremendous response.
"I've gotten many nice responses from very nice people all over the world. I also got bad responses saying I hate men or am seeking attention," she noted. "I really don't care, because I don't hate men at all. For me, feminism means equality. As for the attention thing, I wanted to get attention on this thing!"
