PETA Smears Whistleblower

This week a former PETA employee went public with allegations that Ingrid Newkirk, PETA's president, had encouraged workers to steal and kill pets, and to doctor euthanasia logs so that they could slaughter dogs and cats off the books.

Reporting on this, I noted:

I'm certain we'll be told that Heather Harper-Troje was fired for incompetence. This is the libel generally cooked up to discredit a whistleblower: Oh, we're simply dealing with a disgruntled employee.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has now responded to these allegations:

There is no truth to this disgruntled ex-employee's stories. This is a hateful fantasy from someone who was fired and now, 14 or more years later, has apparently come up with a way to exact revenge for her dismissal.

I wish I could claim psychic powers. But predictable smear campaigns are, by their nature, predictable.
