Peter King, Republican Congressman, Says Prop 8 Ruling Will Actually Help GOP

Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) said Thursday that the recent overturning of California's anti-gay marriage Proposition 8 would benefit the GOP in November by perpetuating a broader conservative narrative that the Democratic "political elite" is out of touch with America.

"As far as the gay marriage issue, I think it's going to subliminally help Republicans," King said on MSNBC this week. "I'm certainly not going to make it an issue. I think the way it helps Republicans is, again -- almost as background music -- is that it shows an attempt by judges or people considered the political elite to impose their social views on the American people without the opportunity to vote."

King continued, comparing Wednesday's decision by conservative-appointed federal judge Vaughn Walker to a recent challenge to Arizona's controversial immigration law by the Department of Justice and saying that they both served as proof that the Obama Administration doesn't "understand what ordinary Americans are going through."
