MSNBC president Phil Griffin says he has been approached to run CNN, Michael Wolff reported in Monday's USA Today.

Amidst record-low ratings, CNN chief Jim Walton announced that he is stepping down from his perch at the cable news network at the end of 2012.

"I think this company needs some new thinking," Walton told the Associated Press over the summer. "I've been doing this job I'm in now for 10 years and I'm ready for a change."

Once the leader in cable news, CNN has fallen into third place behind Fox News and MSNBC.

Wolff reported on Monday that Griffin, who was made president of MSNBC in 2008, said that he has been approached to replace Walton at CNN.

Many names have been floated as possible replacements for Walton, most notably Jeff Zucker, the former NBC Universal chief and current executive producer of Katie Couric's new daytime show.
