Milliner Philip Treacy is still making the rounds, talking about Princess Beatrice's much-discussed royal wedding hat -- you know, that ribbon-meets-reindeer fascinator with its own Facebook fan page, Tumblr and eBay auction price of $130,000.
He previously explained to HollywoodLife.com, "My inspiration was beauty and elegance; it's a 21st century royal wedding. No, they didn't tell me [what they wanted] because I've known them for a long time and I wanted them to look gorgeous and beautiful. They trusted me to make them. Gorgeous and beautiful can be open to interpretation...I thought they looked gorgeous and beautiful. But no one is crying if anyone didn't." (The "they" being Beatrice and sis Princess Eugenie.)
The Guardian's Kate Kellaway recently caught up with Treacy and asked him if he was hurt by all the chatter about the headpiece. He responded, "I felt hurt for [Beatrice]. She is only 22 and there was a little bit of bullying going on. I didn't give a f**k about 140,000 bloggers. In the future, we'll look back and think she looked wild." Okay, then. He also revealed that he once asked Queen Elizabeth whether she enjoyed wearing hats -- "she stood back and said: 'It is part of the uniform.'"
However, the royals aren't the only ones eager to get their hands on...and heads in a Treacy creation:
A couple of years ago, I got a phone call: would Mr Treacy make a hatpin for Elizabeth Taylor? I said: "Might Miss Taylor like a hat to go with the hatpin?" and the answer was: yes. I went to see her at the Dorchester. I didn't know whether I was going to be dealing with a very tricky person but she was a sweetheart. I thought it would be entertaining to do a hat show on her in her room -- because, after all, she is an old lady. I tried 25 hats on her. She kept saying: "Which hat can I have"? And at the end I said: "You can have them all."
