ESSENCE magazine kicked off the Grammy Awards weekend on Thursday with the 6th annual Black Women in Music event. The star-studded affair, which took place at Los Angeles’ historic Avalon Hollywood, featured exclusive performances by Brandy, MC Lyte, Chaka Khan, Lianne La Havas and Jill Scott who was the evening’s special honoree.
Prior to Scott's performance, the Grammy Award-winning songstress reflected on the recognition she received by the celebrated publication.
“It feels great. I’ve been looking at Essence magazine my whole life,” Scott revealed on the red carpet to Getty. “And they were one of the first magazines that put me on their cover and really showed me love and support from the beginning. And so, it’s kind of befitting that they would embrace me the way they are now.”
