Thousands of people, often fleeing war zones in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, have made their way through Hungary in recent weeks in an attempt to reach the countries of western Europe. Getty Images photojournalist Christopher Furlong documented the items these migrants and refugees left behind on their hurried journey west.
Furlong traveled to Rozke, a town on the border between Hungary and Serbia that has become a key transit point for migrants and refugees. There, he found countless objects left behind near a small gap in the border fence between both countries as they were no longer needed or travelers became too tired to carry them. The items, such as flip flops sporting German colors or a cap emblazoned with "Greece," tell the story of an arduous journey of people leaving their former lives to start new ones.
