Police fatally shot two pit bulls in suburban Chicago early Thursday after witnesses say the dogs jumped a fence, attacking and killing a small dog and injuring its owner and an officer.
A female Berwyn, Ill. resident was walking her small dog around 7:40 a.m. Thursday when a pit bull crawled under a fence surrounding its owner's property and attacked the fatally attacked the animal, NBC Chicago reports. Eventually a second pit bull scaled the same fence, and the woman and a responding police officer were both injured by the animals, who were shot and killed by police while still at large.
"The pit bulls were very aggressive, very dangerous. It was an extremely dangerous situation," Berwyn Police Chief James Ritz told the Chicago Tribune at the scene, which he described as "chaos." He said police had received numerous 911 calls reporting the attack.
Attempts to subdue the dogs with Tasers were unsuccessful, and police told the Suburban Life that children were walking to school and other residents were in the area and at risk at the time of the attack. The woman and officer's injuries were not life-threatening, but charges may be forthcoming, Ritz told the newspaper.
Earlier this year, a Chicago alderman proposed an ordinance tightening restrictions on ownership of the controversial breed following a high-profile incident where a jogger suffered near-fatal injuries after being attacked by a pit bull on the lakefront.
