Member's Opening: Art in the Streets
The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA (Downtown)

MOCA members are invited to the opening of Art in the Streets, the first major U.S. museum survey of the history of graffiti and street art. The exhibition showcases installations by over 50 artists, including Fab 5 Freddy, Lee Quiñones, Futura, Margaret Kilgallen, Swoon, Shepard Fairey, Os Gemeos, and JR, as well as emphasizing Los Angeles' role in the evolution of graffiti and street art. Special sections of the exhibition are dedicated to cholo graffiti and Dogtown skateboard culture, as well as projects by influential local artists such as Craig R. Stecyk III, Chaz Bojórquez, Mister Cartoon, RETNA, SABER, REVOK, and RISK. The opening will include performances by the stars of the classic hip-hop film Wild Style -- Busy Bee and the Cold Crush Brothers with Grandmaster Caz -- and the award-winning B-Boy crew from Los Angeles, Killafornia. The Brewery Spring Artwalk

The spring edition of the Brewery Artwalk, a twice annual open studio featuring over 100 artists who live and work at the Brewery lofts in downtown Los Angeles. Participants can explore the studios, meet the artists, purchase artwork, and dine at the on-site restaurant. Admission and parking is free. The artwalk continues Sunday, April 17 from 11am-6pm.
Charles Brittin: West and South

The opening reception for a retrospective exhibition of work by Los Angeles-based photographer Charles Brittin. During the 1950s, Brittin became the unofficial house photographer for the Beat community that coalesced around the artist Wallace Berman; in the 1960s, Brittin became involved with the civil rights movement, and later, he began to document the antiwar movement. Over 100 photographs in this exhibition, organized by Kristine McKenna, will be accompanied by a comprehensive monograph, edited by McKenna, Lorraine Wild, Roman Alonso, Lisa Eisner, and recently published by Hatje Cantz.
Walead Beshty: PROCESSCOLORFIELD

The opening reception for an exhibition of new work by Los Angeles-based artist Walead Beshty. This exhibition will present works that reflect Beshty's continued exploration into the historical, conceptual, and formal tenets of photography.

When in Rome
Istituto Italiano di Cultura (Westwood)

The opening reception for the exhibition When in Rome, organized by the DEPART foundation. The exhibition presents, together for the first time, works by some of the most interesting artists associated with the city of Rome and its environs. A performance by Luigi Ontani at the Hammer Museum, as well as a billboard project by LAXART will take place in conjunction with the exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute, and precedes a large exhibition on young art in Los Angeles that DEPART will bring to Rome. The exhibition remains on view at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura through May 21st.
