There has never been more worldwide attention on the creative culture of Los Angeles. People from all over the world came to LA for the opening of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum (BCAM) and the recent celebration of the 30th anniversary of MOCA, and are already planning for Pacific Standard Time in 2011. We are living in the city everyone is watching and visiting.

THURSDAY, APRIL 8
Alex Israel: Property

The opening reception for an exhibition of thesis work by artist and MFA candidate Alex Israel. Exhibition on view until April 10.

How Many Billboards? Film and Video Program 2
MOCA (Downtown)

In conjunction with the MAK Center for Art and Architecture's exhibition How Many Billboards?, MOCA will screen a two-part series of films and video exploring advertising, media and popular culture. With work by Jennifer Bornstein, Renee Green and Allan Sekula. Exhibition on view at the MAK Center and on billboards throughout Los Angeles. Free, no reservations required.

De LaB: Make Time
Ball-Nogues Studio (Downtown)

In conjunction with the Downtown Art Walk, De LaB (Design East of La Brea) members, which include artists, illustrators, architects and designers, will be holding a pop-up show selling their handmade objects and designs.

Mark Bradford in Conversation with Douglas Fogle
REDCAT (Downtown)

Artist and 2009 MacArthur Fellow Mark Bradford will discuss Merchant Posters, the first comprehensive monograph of his work, with Hammer Museum Chief Curator Douglas Fogle. Published by Gregory R. Miller & Co., Merchant Posters surveys Bradford's textured works on paper and decollages/collages, and details the original printed posters -vivid local advertisements gathered from his Central Los Angeles neighborhood - that served as their source of inspiration. Ugly and Ordinary? Las Vegas Studio Panel Discussion and Reception
Pacific Design Center (West Hollywood)

MOCA and the University of California, Irvine (UCI), Humanities Collective present a symposium investigating the history and legacy of the landmark 1972 publication Learning from Las Vegas with regard to architecture, artistic practice, and urbanism. The symposium is moderated by Cole Akers and Catherine Liu, director of the UCI Humanities Collective; panelists include Edward Dimendberg, associate professor of film and media studies, UCI; Jeffrey Inaba, principal, INABA; and Cecile Whiting, professor of art history, UCI.
